Dr. S K Seth served as the Librarian from 1962 to 3rd January 1967. He was the first Librarian of the Institute.
Born in Kanth, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Seth received his BCom from the Allahabad University in 1949. He then pursued a Diploma in Library Science from Delhi University in 1951.
He worked as Head of the Lending Department in the Delhi Public Library. Later, he moved to England and joined the Leyton Public Library. Dr. Seth then moved to the United States to work at the Enoch Pratt Free Library. While working from 1958 to 1962 as a Librarian in the Business Division of the Cleveland Public Library, Dr. Seth obtained his MBA in 1960 from the Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma, the honours society for business students.
After returning to India in 1962, he joined IIMA and was deputed to participate in the International Teachers Programme at the Harvard Business School from September 1962 to June 1963 along with newly recruited faculty. He visited many academic and research libraries in the United States and selected over 5000 books for the Institute's Library in consultation with the Harvard Faculty. He was the founder Librarian of the Institute's Vikram Sarabhai Library which currently holds over 1, 90,238 books and 14,675 in addition to a number of global digital databases that include company, industry and country information. The library is one of the best management libraries in South East Asia. He was also responsible for the organization of the Case Unit Library consisting of Indian and Foreign Cases during his times.
He succumbed to a heart attack unexpectedly. The S K Seth Award was instituted in 1968 by Dr. Seth's wife, Dr. Shanti Seth in the memory of her husband. Dr. Shanti Seth joined the Institute as Research Associate in the Economics Area in 1967 and retired in 1988. The award is presented to students who obtain the highest grade points in the first year of the Post Graduate Program.
