Arun's research focuses on how marketing interventions can be leveraged to improve societal welfare. He conducts field studies in collaboration with private companies, NGOs and entrepreneurs to examine marketing and welfare outcomes. Such field studies have been conducted in India, Tanzania, Uganda, and the USA. The substantive domains of his research include adoption of innovations, management and marketing of services, and marketing by social enterprises. Arun's research was listed among the top 10 management articles with the highest societal impact by the Financial Times in 2024. He is a recipient of the Responsible Research in Marketing award of the American Marketing Association. His research was shortlisted for theoretical and practical contributions in the field of marketing, such as the Shelby D. Hunt and Harold Maynard awards of the Journal of Marketing.
Arun has published in premier international journals such as the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Macromarketing, and Journal of Marketing Management. Through consulting or executive training, he has engaged with several companies such as Tata Motors, Mercedes Benz, Tata Power, Berger Paints, Cipla, Abbott, JSW Steel, Thermax, Nivea, Zydus, HUL, Motilal Oswal and Aditya Birla Group. He also mentors new ventures on product development and marketing.
Arun's primary teaching interests are new product development and entrepreneurial marketing. He has taught product management to managers and entrepreneurs in a variety of executive education programs. He received his doctorate in business administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining academia, Arun was employed in a research-focused non-profit that supported the product development and marketing activities of hundreds of micro-entrepreneurs in India and East Africa.
