Prof. C Rangarajan (1932- ) is one of the most distinguished economic policy makers of India and was faculty member of IIMA from 1968 to 1982. Before IIMA, he had taught at Loyola College in Chennai, University of Rajasthan and the Indian Statistical Institute in Delhi. He left IIMA to take up the position of Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and later became RBI Governor (1992-1997), Governor of Andhra Pradesh (1997-2003), Chairman of the 12th Finance Commission, Member of the Rajya Sabha and Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council under the Prime Ministership of Manmohan Singh for nearly a decade. IIMA gave him a honorary doctorate during the convocation of 1997. In his interview, he recounted his upbringing and early education in economic and academic life at IIMA where he played an important role in introducing the first IIM-level doctoral programme (Fellow Programme in Management), pursuing research in monetary economics and developing courses in the Economics Area outside the ambit of the case method of teaching.
